CLEAN WOOL LIKE WOOL
The technique used by most carpet cleaners will not work. Do not clean with truck-mounted steam.
Here's why:
- Hot steam shrinks wool, curling corners and wrinkling irreversibly. The delicate nature of handwoven textiles favor cold water cleaning.
- Carpet cleaning chemicals are manufactured for synthetic fiber like nylon, the high pH is far too harsh for a natural fiber. High pH strips the lanolin content that makes wool soft and resilient and wool becomes brittle and wears.
- High pH chemicals dim, dull and fade wool dyes.
ACID CLEANING COMPLEMENTS WOOL
- Acid cleaning reinforces the bond between wool and dye. Wool dyes are acid fast.
- Acid cleaning causes the dye to strike, brightening colors intensely.
- Acid cleaning softens fibers to a gentle texture.
- Acid cleaning leaves the lanolin oils intact.
THE NATURE OF WOOL
The outer layer of the wool, called the epidermis, is made of overlapping scales that hide and store soil, plus lanolin oils to repel soil and stains. The wool institute recommends annual cleaning.
UNDER-PADDING PREVENTS WEAR
Under-padding prevents sliding, wrinkling, and bunching. Under-padding cushions the impact between shoe and hard surface floor providing more comfort underfoot and prolonging the life of the rug. Rugs should be turned twice a year to even wear.
SUN AND MOTH CARE
Sunlight bleaches colors fast, wool dye is sunlight sensitive. Check under the rug from time to time, this is where moths hide. Walking on the rug, vacuuming and exposure to light and air help prevent moths, a rug in use is rarely in danger from moths. Vacuum front, back and floor underneath, spray a nonstaining insecticide on the floor underneath.
